Bots and Scrapers

I develop custom web scrapers in Go, TypeScript and Perl. Capabilities include:

• Running via a headed browser (for sites requiring JavaScript)
• Running via a headless browser (for sites requiring JavaScript)
• Running via a text-based browser (faster -- for sites not requiring JavaScript)
• Some combination of the above
• Caching requests to speed up subsequent runs
• Saving screenshots
• Saving downloaded images
• Creating reports in CSV, JSON, YAML or Excel.

I can run scrapers on your behalf and provide you with reports and downloaded files. If you'd like to run a scraper locally, I can provide you with a standalone command line executable to run on your own system, depending your requirements.

Containerization

I can take existing services and port them over to Docker so that you can deploy them via docker compose, Kubernetes or the orchestator of your choice. This is helpful for repeatable builds, giving developers more choice in how to work locally and being able to deploy with more confidence. I can also set up your Continuous Integration to create and publish the Docker images as part of your deployment pipeline.

Legacy Perl

I have more than 2 decades of experience in working with Perl. I can help you to:

• Maintain legacy code
• Modernize legacy code
• Improve test coverage
• Reduce your dependencies
• Upgrade to a more recent Perl

I'm comfortable working with various Perl web frameworks, but I can also work with CGI scripts and even mod_perl applications. Sometimes you want to upgrade your code and sometimes you want to change as little as possible. I can help with both of these scenarios.

If your legacy Perl code is tying you to an older Operating System or holding back infrastructure upgrades, I can also help you by moving your existing code to Docker, so that you can more easily modernize your stack. See the "Containerization" section for more information on this option.

Wordpress to Hugo Conversion

If you have a Wordpress site and you're tired of the security updates or dealing with a slow site, I can help you convert your site to Hugo. Hugo is a static site generator that is fast, secure and easy to maintain. Hugo can be a good fit if you're not using a lot of WordPress plugins and you don't need your pages generated on every page request.

I can:

• export your content from Wordpress
• convert your content to Markdown
• set up a Hugo build in your CI (Continuous Integration)
• set up a theme of your choosing
• work with a designer to create a custom theme for you

I can also help set up new Hugo sites from scratch or get you set up using a different static site generator, like Jekyll.
